It is a premier institute dedicated to advancing research, capacity building and knowledge dissemination in the urban sector. Its mission is to promote pioneering research and expertise to advance integrated urban solutions, and build a robust discourse on emergent urban issues. It is achieved through training, and capacity development initiatives, collaborating closely with state governments and urban local bodies.

Job Description: 

The ‘Head – Climate Centre for Cities’ will be the lead anchor responsible for all climate related research and associated activities that will steer climate mainstreaming efforts at NIUA. The Head will provide overall guidance to the team and be responsible for communicating NIUA’s work in the climate domain, for both international and external stakeholders. 

Key Responsibilities

Research, Policy Outreach, Knowledge Dissemination and Capacity Building:

  • Provide guidance in research and preparation of knowledge products on areas of climate change.
  • Support translation of research outcomes into actionable policies and practices, facilitating engagement with policy and practitioner communities.
  • Advocate for evidence-based decision-making at global, national, and regional levels.
  • Represent the organization in international forums and conferences, showcasing research findings and contributing to global discourse on climate change.
  • Lead the organization’s delegation to WUF, COPs and other international events
  • Oversee capacity-building initiatives and fostering knowledge exchange within and beyond the organization.

Programme Leadership and Management:

 

 

  • Mentor team members
  • Provides oversight to team members, support staff and consultants working within the theme, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented work environment.
  • Strategically plans and manages the centre’s annual budget and activities, in close coordination with organizational leadership.
  • Contributes to the development and delivery of transformative partnership platforms.

 Resource Mobilization:

  • Develops and executes strategies to secure funding for climate change initiatives, collaborating with donors, international organisations and external partners.
  • Develops and cultivates relationships with key funding partners, ensuring sustained financial support aligned with the organization’s strategic objectives.
  • Leads efforts to prepare and submit funding proposals, leveraging expertise in grant writing and project design.

Partnership Management:

  • Cultivates and maintains relationships with key partners and stakeholders.
  • Drives impactful collaboration with academia, policymakers, and practitioners to advance climate-resilient development pathways.

 

Qualification and experience

  • A PhD or Master’s degree from a recognised academic/professional institution in Management Planning/City Planning/Urban Policy/ Governance/Urban Development/Climate Science/Environmental Sciences/ Environmental Engineering or related areas.
  • 15-20 years of work experience,at least 10-12 years of professional experience in the climate, urban mobility, WASH, disaster management, and environment sector, with demonstrated skills in policy, research, capacity building, project implementation and team management.
  • At least 5 years of experience in leading multidisciplinary research endeavours focused on climate mitigation and adaptation, energy low-emissions development, low-emission transport, water resource management, sanitation, and disaster management.

Skills

  • Demonstrated experience and thought leadership in at least three of the following areas: climate change adaptation, disaster resilience, climate mitigation, climate finance, risk assessments, low carbon mobility, decentralised urban water supply, wastewater and stormwater management, low-carbon development pathways or related topics of concern to long-term climate resilience in Indian cities.
  • Excellent facilitator with good networking, convening, partnership/liaison-building skills
  • Strong analytical and communication skills with proven ability to network with key stakeholders, influence decisions and drive agenda forward.
  • Good analytical and knowledge management skills, including writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience in managing teams and budgets.
  • Excellent skills in large project coordination experience working with international agencies and national/state/municipal governments in the urban sector will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to adjust priorities to meet emerging demands.

Location of position

Based at the office of the NIUA, Core 4B, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi; with travel as and when required.

Term of position

Fixed position for 3 years (Renewable). The position is purely on contractual basis.

Remuneration

At par with the industry standards, depending on experience and skills. Proof of past remuneration may be required upon offer.
