About the role:

The Deputy Manager - Climate Action will play a crucial role in assisting the Program Manager with the coordination and implementation of all environment-related projects. A significant focus of this position will be on renewable energy management initiatives, including solar installations in schools, community buildings, and households, promotion of smokeless stoves, and projects involving wind, bio, and other renewable energy sources. This role involves active engagement with diverse stakeholders to drive environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Project Execution & Management:

    • Execute environmental projects, campaigns, and corporate employee engagement activities.
    • Design, develop concept notes, innovate, facilitate, and implement environmental projects, with a special focus on renewable energy management. This includes initiatives such as solar installations in schools, community buildings, and households; promotion of smokeless stoves; and projects involving wind, bio, and other renewable energy sources.
    • Oversee planning, execution, and documentation of environmental project activities, ensuring their timely and effective completion. This includes managing budgeting, financial reconciliation, and reporting of project activities.
  • Partnership & Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Establish and maintain partnerships with schools, colleges, community groups, corporations, government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders for mass awareness events and volunteer mobilization.
    • Manage partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders, including government bodies (e.g., municipal corporations, forest departments, education departments, Panchayat and Gramin Vikas Vibhag), academic institutions, NGOs, and citizens groups, as well as other suitable national and international forums. This is essential for smooth project execution and to further United Way Mumbais vision for environmental conservation.
    • Ensure effective communication and partnership development/management with various program stakeholders and partners for successful project implementation.
  • Research & Development:

    • Contribute to the development and adoption of a robust Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) framework for the projects.
    • Conduct continuous research on issues addressed by United Way Mumbai and provide relevant inputs for the development, conceptualization, and execution of projects.
  • Communication & Reporting:

    • Develop appropriate IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) materials to support project themes, including solar installations, smokeless stoves, and other renewable energy initiatives.
    • Prepare reports, presentations, mailers, advisories, donor reports, social media posts, awareness materials, concept notes, proposals, and other communications on various environmental themes.
  • Team Leadership & Fieldwork:

    • Manage, train, and mentor project teams to ensure efficient execution and capacity building.
    • Undertake extensive fieldwork in the outskirts of Mumbai and other project locations across India for monitoring visits and project execution, as required.
  • Representation & Compliance:

    • Represent the organization at external meetings, workshops, and conferences related to renewable energies.
    • Ensure compliance with local environmental regulations and international best practices in renewable energy.

Skills & Qualification: 

  • Education: Postgraduate in Science, Environmental Science, Environmental/Mechanical/Agricultural Engineering, or studies in Sustainability and Renewable Energies, or any other equivalent degree. Candidates with prior experience in the Renewable Energies sector would be preferred.
  • Experience: At least 5 to 6 years of experience in managing and executing projects in the field of the environment.
  • Interpersonal Skills: A dynamic and versatile person who can easily connect and effectively work with internal and external stakeholders of the project.
  • Environmental Knowledge: Good knowledge of various environmental issues and related interventions.
  • Technical Skills: Excellent MS Office skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Domain Knowledge: Adequate knowledge and understanding about the field of Pollution/Waste Management and ability to provide relevant inputs for successful execution of project activities.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills.

    • Must be proficient in communicating in English and Hindi (fluency in Marathi will be an added advantage).
  • Work Ethic & Adaptability:

    • Candidate must be a team player and should be willing to travel in and around Mumbai and other project locations across India for implementing program activities.
    • Strong ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to accomplish time-constrained assignments.
    • Adaptability and the ability to work in dynamic, challenging environments.
